EdSource: How California community colleges are using AI to battle financial aid fraud

"About 80 of the state's 115 community colleges are now or will soon be using" LightLeapAI ®

EdSource details how an AI model first trained on Foothill-De Anza's historical enrollment data — looking at device fingerprints, IP addresses, time zones, ages, and cross-institution phone-number matches — has spread across California, with the Coast Community College District reporting a roughly 96% reduction in enrollment fraud after deployment ahead of Spring 2025.

The piece traces the lineage of the platform from a February 2024 contract worth $56,250 between Foothill-De Anza and N2N Services (originally for course prediction) into the systemwide adoption that the Chancellor's Office subsidized starting July 1, 2025.
